What the job actually covers
This is the scope we price. If something on your project falls outside it, we say so during the estimate rather than after.

The trim carpenter is doing the trim
Siding jobs are usually judged by the trim details, and trim is what we do. Corners, casings and transitions get carpenter attention.

We flash before we cover
Head flashing over windows and proper lapping at every penetration. It costs a little time and it is the whole ballgame.

What is behind it gets checked
Once the old siding is off we can see the sheathing and the framing. Anything wet or soft gets dealt with, and you see it first.
The north wall is a different job
On a New Hampshire house, the north and northeast walls stay damp longest and dry slowest, and they are where failed siding shows up first. When we walk an exterior we start there, because if a wall is going to tell you the truth about what is happening behind the siding, it is that one.

Siding questions
Can you side over what is there now?
On some houses it is possible, and we would still rather not. Taking the old siding off is the only way to see the sheathing, correct the flashing and know what you are actually paying to cover up.
Fiber cement or vinyl?
Vinyl costs less, goes on faster and does fine. Fiber cement costs more, holds paint well, takes a crisper trim detail and reads as a higher end house. We will tell you which one fits what you are trying to do.
Do you replace the trim at the same time?
Almost always, and it is usually the right call. New siding against tired trim reads as a patch, and the trim is where the water details live anyway.
